Chidambaram asks state Govt to come up with plan for Tirap-Changlang

ITANAGAR Apr 3: Home Minister P Chidambaram revealed that he has asked the State Government to come up with a special plan for Tirap and Changlang which would not only include the law and order but would also incorporate development plans for good roads, electricity, infrastructural and skill development. He said this during a visit to Khonsa this afternoon.

He insisted for a skill development institute in these two districts so that the youths are being provided expertise knowledge about various skills for income generation.  

Making his voice very clear, the Union Minister said that the government of India has adopted zero tolerance policy to militancy. He however stated that if any organization is willing to hold talks with the government, they are welcomed provided they shied the means of anti-social activities.

While at Khonsa the Union Minister along with the chief minister and the entourage visited the Khonsa Police station.

In a meeting with elected representatives of Tirap and Changlang and public leaders at Assam Rifles auditorium, Chidambaram called for a unison effort to pave the way for development.

“Money is not the constraint, but the thing is how you spend the money”, the HM said and further added that the people and the administration need to keep close vigil to ensure that qualitative work is being undertaken.

 

Admitting to the fact that Tirap and Changlang have been lagging behind in the spheres of development due to various factors, the HM exhorted the people to believe in themselves in order to solve the problem.

 Responding to the memorandum placed by State Assembly Speaker Wanglin Lowangdong on behalf of the people of Tirap and Changlang to relax the physical criteria for the youths of Tirap and Changlang in the line of the relaxation provided by the state government, the Home Minister assured to look into it. He also informed that 4th Battalion of IRBn and 1 Battalion of Arunachal Scout is being raised which will undoubtedly provide employments to many deserving youths from the district. On the plea for rehabilitation package for surrendered militants and compensation for victims of insurgent attacks, Chidambaram disclosed that there is already a programme for such cases and asked the district administration to provide the government with the names so that the process could be expedited. Legislator P Khimhun, and Kamthok Lowang also spoke in the meeting.

Additional Secretary K Verma, Joint Secretary Home Ministry Naveen Verma and Safi A. Rijvi OSD to HM also accompanied the tour.

TAWANG: “Meaningful development is pacing up in the state and I hope the infrastructural bottleneck which has been affecting the state in developmental spheres will soon be addressed”, said Union Home Minister P Chidambaram while appreciating the quality of work executed after visiting various places of Tawang this morning.   

While lauding the generous and hospitable people, the Union Home Minister said that the state is already witnessing a huge inflow of foreign and domestic tourists. He encouraged further to boost this industry for generating employment avenues and augmenting the economy of the region.

Earlier, the mesmerizing beauty of Tawang and the hospitable people of Arunachal have won the heart of P Chidambaram who after arriving at Tawang said “This is my maiden visit to your place. It is beautiful and it has been rightly quoted by many as the hidden paradise on earth”.

 Accompanied by State Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, State Home Minister Tako Dabi, DGP Vimla Mehra, the Union Minister visited the Majestic Gaden Namgyal Lhatse Monastery (Tawang Monastery), the Craft Centre where the locally weaved garments and crafts were displayed, the multi-speciality Hospital consecrated by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama during his recent visit in the month of November last year, Kalawangpo Convention Hall and later before flying for Khonsa in Tirap district laid wreath to the martyrs of 1962 war at the War Memorial. Landslide claims 7 in Koloriang

ITANAGAR, Apr 3: Seven people of a family including women and minors died when a landslide triggered by torrential rain completely buried the house last night at about 10.30 pm at Koloriang in Kurung Kumey district. All the dead originally hail from Sangram circle of the district.

The dead include DRDA employee Tai Powak (28), head of the family, wife Tai Yakok (24) and their minor daughter Tai Koyu (3) and son Tai Achi Bhai, who was only 6 months old. Three relatives staying with them – Hilang Yalar (22), Hilang Yadak (9) and Hilang Pinch (12) – also perished in the accident.

Nyapin MLA Bamang Felix while expressing shock over the tragic incident informed that rescue operations that began immediately after the accident were hampered due to bad weather and continued till noon today. He said that all the dead bodies have been retrieved from beneath the debris and transported to Sangram for last rites.

While condoling the deaths, Felix appealed the government to provide ex-gratia of at least Rs 1 lakh for each to the next of kin of the deceased. According to police sources, the tragic landslide incident occurred in Koloriang township near the IB at around 10.30 pm yesterday damaging the dwelling house and killing seven including minors.

Sources informed that life came to a standstill in the township and nearby areas due to continuous raining for the last few weeks. Sporadic incidents of landslide in the township were reported. Sarli area remained cut off due to landslide, sources said.

All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA) deeply mourned the tragic death of the seven persons  and conveyed deep sense of condolence to the bereaved family, prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.

The Association appealed the State Govt to grant adequate  compensation to the kins and kiths of the deceased.

 

Siram flags off bus service under JnNURM, donates Ambulances

PASIGHAT, Apr 3: Education Minister Bosiram Siram flagged off three city buses funded under Jawharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) at Pasighat today,

Speaking on the occasion, Siram greeted the citizens, Transport Department and local Urban Development for the successful launch of the utility based city bus service at Pasighat.

Later, Siram donated one Ambulance each from his local area development fund to the General Hospital, Pasighat and ACH (Arunachal Charity Home) Dibrugarh.

The DDHS Dr. K. Lego and MD (ACH) J. Modi and O. Paron also attended the occasion.

While referring REPA (Right to Education Protection) he stated every child of the state has right to have education and accordingly the state government decided to provide free and compulsory education upto VIII standard, Siram added.

He further informed that six High Musk Tower from his developmental fund and three from power department have already been sanctioned to electrify the entire township. Adding that rupees seventeen lacs has also been sanctioned for renovation and construction works of Lal Bdr. Sastri ME School building and the President (PMA) and DDSE would start the work under supervision of DC soon. The minister also informed that priority would be given to the Pasighat Road-Network and required fund is available with the Urban Development department, Pasighat. The Deputy Commissioner Onit Panyang assured to extend possible help to the and appealed to the people to pay fares as fixed by the government while availing the service.

Among others, SSP Debesh Chandra Srivastava, HODs and developmental officers, ZP Chairperson Yai Dabi, BCC President Tobuk Dai, Chairman Youth Congress (East Siang Unit) Okom Tamuk, many local leaders and party functionaries also attended the function. (DIPRO)

 

Governor visits Vijoynagar

ITANAGAR, Apr 3: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Gen JJ Singh today visited Vijoynagar in Changlang. He is the first Governor of the state to visit the area. During his visit, the Governor  made an aerial survey  of the proposed road from Miao to Vijoynagar.

Having realized the importance of the road, which is the lifeline of the people of the area, who otherwise have to go on foot march for six days, the Governor wants it to be completed at the earliest. The high level team also flew over Deban Resort in the Namdapha Wildlife sanctuary.

Addressing a public meeting at Vijoynagar, Gen Singh informed that an amount of Rupees 3.5 crore has already been sanctioned for the clearing of the existing jeep able road and make it through.

“Once it is completed, I will lead the convoy to Vijoynagar in my car, with Chief Minister’s vehicle in the second, followed by vehicles of Rural Works Department and Environment and Forest Depart in the cascade”, Gen Singh announced, which was received by huge applauses by the denizens.

Gen Singh added, for an all weather carpeted road, survey works are over and project is being pursued at all level. I promise you today, I will have it done before I complet my term as the Governor of the State, he assured. At the same time, he urged upon the concerned department to take up the project in a mission mode.

The Governor, who inspected the runway of the Advance Landing Ground, Vijoynagar informed the people that secondary airport will be coming up soon.  Governor assured his best to mitigate other problems of the people, including regular helicopter and postal services and posting of medical officer.

As token of love, the Governor announced an amount of Rs one lakh for procurement of solar lamps and a generator for the Circle Officer’s office. He gifted organic vegetables and fruits from Raj Bhavan garden to the people there and donated pre-moulded dustbins.

Speaking on the occasion, Vijoynagar Circle Officer R.K. Rai, on behalf of the people, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Governor and the team for visiting the area and assured to raise upto the expectation of the Governor.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Yapu Yobin, a public leader said, visit will herald the development activities in the area.

Later before leaving Vijoynagar, Governor, who has close affiliation with Assam Rifles since his early days in the military service in Nagaland, interacted with personnel posted there and exhorted them to be alert and always help the denizens.

  Rural Works Department Chief Executive Officer KC Dhimole informed that the road will be having 46 bridges, ranging from 60meters to less than ten meters and protection wall of 12,000 meters, (PRO, Raj Bhavan).

 

Bishop Wishes Fullness of Life on Easter

Nirjuli, Apr 03: Rt. Rev. Dr. John Thomas Kattrukudiyil, the Bishop of Itanagar greeted the people on the Easter vigil and wished them that “Fullness of Life” that Jesus came to give to all.

Easter vigil was held in different parts of Arunachal today marked with special services and masses at midnight. The mood of thousands of faithful was lit in prayers and rituals at St. Peter’s Church, Nirjuli during the Easter midnight mass presided over by Rt. Rev. Dr. John Thomas Kattrukudiyil, the Bishop of Itanagar.  

At the vigil service at night the faithful carried lighted torches like the early Christians.   Highly meaningful ceremonies were conducted during this vigil service.  This included the service of Light at which a new fire was kindled and blessed. A big candle called “Paschal Candle” was lit from the new fire. The congregation that gathered in darkness with unlit candles lighted their candles from the flame of the Paschal candle representing the risen Christ.

The readings describing the history of creation and salvation were read out solemnly at the service of the readings.   The services of the Holy Communion was the climax of the Great Vigil.

Easter is the most important feast for the Christians. Christians believe that after Jesus’ death on the cross he was buried. But on the third day he rose again. The New Testament narrates how the risen Jesus appeared to a few pious women and to His close disciples.

The universal significance of Christ’s resurrection is that truth triumphs over evil and love is stronger than hatred. Easter celebrates compassion and brotherhood and the hope of a better tomorrow.

 

Umbrey calls for preservation of tradition and cultures

ITANAGAR, Apr 3: Youth of today have more advantages as they have link with the traditional past along with  present time which has technological advantages, said MLA Laeta Umbrey, while speaking at the Moh Mol celebration as chief guest at Tirap Changlang Ground, Sinki Park Itanagar today.

He further advising the youth to preserve, protect and promote the old age tradition and cultures of the society, termed them as one of the pivotal group to play major role in shaping the future of the society.

While, citing example of successfully organized Namdapha eco-tourism festival at Miao and Pangsua Pass winter festival at Nampong he lauded the outlook and peace loving attitude of people, adding that, the unique cultural identity of the Tangsas would be one of the major tourist attractions in near future.

Among all the tribes of Arunachal Pradesh, after Tawang and Bomdila, Tangsa areas have the huge tourist potential and expressed hope that the Changlang district would emerge as one of the developed district in the state.

Earlier, Chairman, Moh Mol celebration Committee, Itanagar MLA K Mosang highlighted about the importance of the Moh-Mol festival and maintaining peaceful co-existence and harmony with the other community. He also calls for preservation, protection and promotion of own tradition and cultures to maintain own identity.

Finance Minister Setong Sena, who is also the Patron of Moh Mol festival celebration, Itanagar also appealed the people to preserve own traditions and customs.

Later, Umbrey, Sena, Director, Industries Tokong Pertin and other guest took part in the traditional dance and community feast.

Cultural Troops from Changlang, Manmow and Nyishi cultural troops from Itanagar displayed traditional dances during the occasion.

 

ITBP DG pays maiden visit to 10th ITBP Hq

KIMIN, Apr 3: Ranjeet Kumar Bhatia, Director General of Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Force paid his maiden visit to 10th ITBP base camp at Kimin this morning since he was appointed as DG of the force in February last.

Two permanent Recruitment Training Centre (RTC) at Kimin and Lohitpur would come up very soon and proposal for same has been sent to the Centre, the DG told this reporter during a brief interaction.

He also called upon the youths of Arunachal Pradesh, especially women to join ITBP since a battalion of women has already been raised in the force.

On being questioned that what kind of message he wants to convey to the Jawans, the DG wished to call upon the ITBP jawans to work with utmost sincerity and dedication to safeguard the interest of the nation as well as keep intact the reputation of the force. ITBP has presently 45 battalions with over 58,000 force strength from top to bottom rank.

During his visit, the DG inaugurated the SBI ATM counter at Kimin and held a close door meeting with the officers and Jawans of ITBP force here.

"With the opening of the ATM counter, a long-felt demand of people of Kimin has been fulfilled," an inspector of the force said, adding that "Till yesterday, people had to go to North Lakhimpur, Assam for all kinds of money transactions."

Earlier, the DG was accorded warm welcome by local cultural troupes on his arrival at around 11.15 am and felicitated by presenting him with a shawl, Nyishi traditional headgear and dao.

 

DASU demands APST bus service

ROING: The Dibang Valley Students Union (DASU) has  urged the Parliamentery secretary, Transport Karikho Kri  to take immediate steps for introduction of state transport service on Roing-Anini road.

In a memorandum to the secretary, the union said the transport department has been providing bus service in almost all the districts of the state, but the Dibang Valley district is still deprived of state transport service despite having proper road connectivity.

Station Superintendent had taken step to run bus service in 2001 but could not be materialized due to stiff opposition from few Sumo operators, the memorandum further said. It said that thoug the Sumo operators run their services but the local poor people and Govt staff are finding it difficult to bear higher rate of Sumo fare.

ITANAGAR, Apr 3: Naharlagun Kalibari Mahila Samiti in collaboration with Madhuwanti will organize a classical evening on Violin and Vocal with Pandit Bidyut Kumar Mishra at Kali Mandir premises on April 11 next.

Born in a family of musicians of Barpeta, Bidyut has enthralled audiences with his remarkable performance in India and various countries in Europe. Presently he is serving as lecturer in Violin at State College of Music, Guwahati, Assam.

ITANAGAR, Apr 3: A social service programme was conducted at Doimukh millennium auditorium today wherein more than five hundred people participated. The participants included Panchayat leaders, GBs, public leaders, government officers, general public and officials.

Joining them in their noble initiative was parliamentary secretary Industries and local MLA, Nabam Rebia. Later a meeting chaired by Zilla Parishad member, Tana Bado was held.

 

Essomi Foundation conducts orientation prog for SHGs

ITANAGAR, Apr 3: With an objective to establish a “triode linkage” of SHGs with bank and Cooperative Society, the Essomi Foundation in collaboration with Namsai LAMPS organized an orientation training program at ADC’s conference hall, Namsai yesterday. Around  50 trainees including representatives from 10 SHGs, NGOs, public leaders took part in it.

The program was inaugurated by R.K.Sharma, Additional Deputy Commissioner-Namsai and attended by SDAO-Namsai, SDHO-Namsai, BDO-Namsai, VO-Namsai, ADI-Sericulture, Branch Manager-A.P.Coop Apex bank-Namsai.

Sharma emphasized on maintaining transparency and accountability in SHG management, without which the basic objective of forming SHGs will be jeopardized. He also urged all the women members of SHGs to take up some social issues-like drug menace, opium, alcoholism, gambling etc so that these social evils can be eradicated effectively with public participation and co operation.

The training was conducted by Dr K. Sarmah-SVO-Lekang, who is a state awardee for pioneering the “Triode-Model” in piggery & fishery at Lekang which brought National award to Lekang LAMPS Ltd during 2007-08 and National award for best entrepreneur to two SHGs during 2009-10.

The programme was designed by Chow Indrajeet Namchoom-ARCS cum MD-Namsai LAMPS, who is also state awardee for SHG oriented activities.

 

Arunachal’s winning run ends at Assam Open T20

ITANAGAR, Apr 3: Arunachal Cricket team suffered a six wicket defeat to experienced Tezpur Cricket Coaching Centre at All Assam Open Twenty20 Cricket Tournament yesterday. With this, Arunachal’s winning run in the tournament ended at quarterfinal stage, according to Arunachal Cricket Association.

Arunachal team, which won the toss and chose to bat first, set a moderate target of 117 runs before the Tezpur team. However, the Assam team has successfully chased the target losing only four wickets in the 15th over. Wicketkeeper batsman Kamsa Yangfo was the leading scorer (28 run) for Arunachal Pradesh.

The Tezpur team, which was comprised of  several Ranjy Trophy players, also tamed the Guwahati Cricket team in the semifinal today and reached the final. The final would be held on  April six.

MOOPIN –A festival of Arunachal Pradesh

Moopin is a sacred ritual festival of the Galo tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. The festival has associated myths, religious chants, rhythmic and vigorous dances and also carries positive messages for a harmonious existence on earth. It is the “ritual for fertility of crops, plants, animals andhumanbeings.”

There are six seasons in the Galo calendar:- ‘Dwlo (January-February), ‘Dwgu (March-April), Dwrii (May-June), ‘Dwraa (July-August) ‘Dwgin (September-October), and ‘Twruk (November-December). Moopin is performed and celebrated in ‘Dwgu.

For prosperity through agriculture one needs to know the art of cultivation. After cultivation it is also important to respect, preserve and rehabilitate the vegetation for revitalization of the earth.

The festival is celebrated to worship Mother Moopin and also to bring into people’s consciousness that the agricultural season has began. Through hard work, the plenty, prosperity, good health and preservation of all living beings with the blessing of Moopin will dawn on earth again.

Moopin is the name of a goddess, the goddess of agriculture, the preserver of the plant kingdom. She can be compared with Annapurna Devi.

The Moopin mythology and sacred texts say that Moopin ‘Anv   (mother) was the first to teach the art of cultivation to Abo Tanii - the first man ever born on this earth. She not only taught the art of cultivation but she and her daughters ‘Piqku ‘Pintv and Dwyww Taamww showed Abo Tanii all the types of agricultural implements and their uses.

Had there not been a Moopin ‘Anv to teach Abo Tanii the art of living, Abo Tanii would have lived in darkness and would have stayed ignorant of the prosperity and plenty that modern and civilized people are enjoying today through agriculture.

THE MYTHOLOGY

Abo Tanii, the first man on Earth of the Tanii group of people, lived all alone. One day he walked to a river valley and met ‘Todee-Reenee (a small river bird) who informed him that Takar and ‘Taji (a type of terrestrial being living elsewhere) were going to conduct a big wedding ceremony and sacrifice ten mithuns at once. He also invited –

“Tanii takii ruu `vm

‘Tasa tala ruu ‘vm

Imbo kembo ruu ‘vm”

Abo Tanii  soliloqued-

“As the natural first being of earth these mithuns belong to me. How can Takar and `Taji kill my animals!” Thus, he went to the area of Takar `Taji on the pretense of attending the marriage celebrations. But his aim was to get back his mithuns by any means. He devised a trick and made an effigy of his own mother, covered it with some materials, and positioned it on a raft in the middle of the river. He then placed a `Murtv Koomv (bamboo stick) nearby the image. After planning thus, he reached the place of Takar `Taji and carefully watched the performance of the ceremony and the preparation of Rindu-`Kandu (iteneries of making image). There, he found out that Takar-`Taji’s Rindu-`Kandu preparations were being made incorrectly. Abo Tanii suggested to Takar `Taji to invite his mother who could make the figures of Murdom, Poxo, Wsi–`Puksi and Moxi-Tagv in the proper way. According to Tanii’s suggestion, Takar `Taji deputed `Kvkoo Paw (Squirrel) to invite Tanii’s mother. Tanii cautioned `Kvkoo Paw that his mother is deaf and dumb and it is only with `Murtv Koomv that she can be awakened. So, he should push with `Murtv Koomv to get a response.

‘Kvkoo-Paw went there and did as was directed by Abo Tanii. Thus, the effigy of his mother fell into deep water and was “drowned”. ‘Kvkoo-Paw returned terror-stricken. He narrated the unfortunate incident to Abo Tanii. Abo Tanii knew that it was his trick, but he showed much anger against ‘Kvkoo-Paw and appeared to be grief-stricken. He threatened to destroy the whole world in anger. Takar-‘Taji were terribly shaken. They assured to offer back to Abo Tanii nine Hobo (mithuns), but Abo Tanii  behaved as if he was not consoled and pacified by return of the mithuns. He continued to show his anger.

Takar-‘Taji had invited a large number of guests and now had only one mithun to be sacrificed. The marriage ceremony was organised as a magnificent feast, but one mithun was not sufficient. So, the guests were offered various other things. At first they presented ‘Dumpuu and ‘Kiipuu (Deer and Dog) with Agyaa-‘Posum (a packet of soya beans) and a packet of bones. But both ‘Dumpuu and‘Kiipuu quarreled with each other. ‘Dumpuu destroyed the Agyaa-‘Posum, kicked up ‘Lootv ‘Posum and ran away. ‘Kiipuu followed ‘Dumpuu. ‘Dumpuu requested shelter of ‘Kuunv ‘Lamnv:-

“Tusi yela `bvka

Tusi bala ‘bvka”

‘Kuunv ‘Lamnv replied-

“Qo tuusi `baa `lvv maayee

‘Kuunv bulu ‘vm  

‘Lamnv bulu ‘vm

Buuto lakaa ‘adee”

Meanwhile, Abo Tanii was in hot pursuit after ‘Kiipuu ‘Dumpuu. They then reached Dwgoo ‘Pwnv, the heavenly land of Moopin Mooji. Moopin was surprised to find them. She picked up ‘Dumpuu, and imprisoned Abo Tanii and ‘Kiipuu. To protect ‘Dumpuu, she fettered Abo Tanii and ‘Kiipuu. Within those few days of agony Tanii hinted to ‘Kiipuu to look for a rodent. ‘Kiipuu did so. With the help of ‘Kiipuu the rodent was pushed into the armpit of Tanii, pressed to death, and left like that. He called Moopin ‘Anv and told her that he might die any time any day. The place was also stinking.

All beings at Dwgoo-Yaamo were frightened and agreed:

“Tanii `Namsw `v `Ribii Dooku

Tanii ‘Namsw ‘v Rvyaa Dooku. ”

Out of sympathy and to save Tanii, Moopin ordered Dwyww Taamww to release Tanii and ‘Kiipuu. Tanii got up and stretched his body.

“Tanii Pvrv `Duuka Toku

Tanii Pvrv ‘Daka Toku.”

During his short stay at Dwgoo Yaamo, Tanii observed that the land of Moopin was full of prosperity with food and wealth.

On being released, Abo Tanii approached Moopin and begged for something to be given to him as he suffered very much in Moopin’s place.

“`Qom Xogoo `Goodee Kuyyom

‘Qom ‘Hogo ‘Goodee Kuyyom

Daatu Daajum Yilii Goku ‘Ka.”

Moopin gave Tanii some seeds of paddy and maize which he put in the ears of ‘Kiipuu. Abo Tanii then came back to earth and sowed the seeds in a barren place called Abin Bindo Poko Looto. They were then promptly eaten up by wild birds.

Abo Tanii again went to the place of Moopin and Dwgoo Yaamii and told them what had happened to the seeds. Moopin presented Dwgoo ‘gv ‘hwgmen, a knife, and instructed him to select a patch of land, clean the jungle and loosen the soil. Abo Tanii  returned to earth and did according to the instruction to construct a Komduu ‘Poraa (a kind of fishing trap) to catch Kaadaa Ramyo (a kind of animal) whose skin could be used and exchanged for Gwwtum ‘Yoksap (an implement for cultivation) from ‘Xwwr-Poro Koomar (a dealer of implements). Thus equipped with implements Abo Tanii started clearing the jungle.

But Yapom and Yaji, the deities of the jungle, appeared before him when he started to clean the jungle. Yapom and Yaji asked him to stop cleaning the jungle. Disappointed, Abo Tanii reappeared to the place of Moopin and told her about the interference of Yapom and Yaji.

Moopin requested Yapom and Yaji to part with a plot of land to give to Abo Tanii. But they did not agree, so Moopin played a trick on them. She said that some trees should be felled in the forest. When the trees dry up, she said, a fire will be lit. Yapom, Yaji and Tanii will stand in the middle of the burning forest. The one who can survive the raging fire will be declared the Master of the Forest. It was also decided that Dwyww Taamww would light the fire. Meanwhile, Moopin had secretly instructed Abo Tanii to dig a pit in advance and slip into it when the fire catches.

On the appointed day, Dwyww Taamww lit the fire. Yapom and Yaji could not withstand the fire and fled into the forest. When the fire cleared Abo Tanii emerged from the pit and stood firm in the encircling smoke. Accordingly, Moopin declared Abo Tanii master of the earth. From that time, he was free from hindrance. He sowed ‘Miilii ‘Amlii. Yapom and Yaji accepted their defeat. Yapom Yaji and all other deities requested Abo Tanii to honour Moopin with a celebration ritual. With the guidance and help of Dwyww Taamww and ‘Piqku‘Pintv, Tanii  prepared the image of Moopin who gave more seeds to Abo Tanii , with which he  started regular cultivation on earth.

Abo Tanii went again to Moopin, but this time his main purpose was to ask for the hand of Moopin’s beautiful daughter, Dwyww Taamww/Jeyww Taamww. Dwyww Taamww consented to marry Abo Tanii and Moopin also agreed to the proposal, which was in the best interest of his daughter. In this way Abo Tanii married Dwyww Taamww; their marriage was attended by Moopin and other deities.

Moopin, the presiding deity of wealth, presented to them agricultural implements, seeds and precious stones. Dwyww Taamww was also bestowed with a singular power of preparing a pot-full of rice from a single grain. Dokee-Doak (a small basket for rice grain) Yaarii-Yaapor and Dosi-‘Ginsi were also given to Dwyww Taamww.

Thus Abo Tanii and Dwyww Taamww began their conjugal life in full peace and happiness. They did not cultivate and did not bring forth much produce, but made use of Dwyww Taamww’s power as she continued to produce enough rice from one grain to feed the entire family. They were happy in this way. Later on Abo Tanii additionally married ‘Rosi Taamww, daughter of ‘Dwro (famine). However, Dwyww Taamww was not willing to share with her as a co-wife, since she was the daughter of ‘Dwro, the Famines.

One day Dwyww Taamww went back to ‘Dwgo ‘Pwnv. During her absence, ‘Rosi Taamww had to prepare rice, but she did not know the method of Dwyww Taamww of using only one grain at a time. She used two grains, which produced huge quantity of rice that could not be fully consumed by both of them. She at first did not know what to do with this extra quantity of rice and, being afraid of Dwyww Taamww, she called ‘Dwrv-‘Kiibo (the hungry dog) to finish it. ‘Dwrv-‘Kiibo came and ate up the whole of the leftover rice. As Dwyww Taamww had not returned yet, again ‘Rosi Taamww was to prepare food. She again put two grains and that time the grains did not produce huge quantity but remained two grains only; it appeared that the Famine had consumed the magical power together with the left over food.

From that day, the first famine broke out and Abo Tanii had to face a terrible situation. In spite of his efforts, he could not overcome it. The news of Abo Tanii’s miserable condition reached ‘Dwgo ‘Pwnv, and Tanii’s wife Dwyww Taamww also therefore came to know of it. She had decided not to return; however, when Abo Tanii  approached ‘Dwgo ‘Pwnv for help in sending Dwyww Taamww to his house, Dwyww Taamww expressed her willingness to return – but only on the conditions that ‘Rosi Taamww should leave for ever, that she should be thrown into the river, and that ‘Dwrv ‘Kiibo should be destroyed. After that, Abo Tanii should pray to Moopin Taamww and other deities, who would again provide him with agricultural implements and seeds. Only then would Dwyww Taamww return, along with Moopin.

On coming to know the wishes of Dwyww Taamww, Abo Tanii decided to kill ‘Rosi Taamww. ‘Rosi Taamww was drowned in the river and ‘Dwrv ‘Kiibo was cut into pieces and thrown into a waterfall. In this task, Abo Tanii was assisted by Lwwtum and Lwwro, the Gods of War. Lastly, Abo Tanii made images of Moopin and other Gods and Goddesses. He was guided by Dwyww Taamww in his task of making these images, including of ‘Loosi Loorv, Loodo-Loorv, Riilum-Taajum and Garee-‘Gapo (clothing).

Abo Tanii worshipped these images and invoked Moopin and other deities who came to Tanii’s place and brought Dwyww Taamww along with them. They restored all agricultural implements and seeds but did not restore the magical power of preparing large quantity of food from one single grain. However, through the favours of Moopin, Abo Tanii obtained the power to cultivate a large area. He was given agriculture implements and directed to celebrate Moopin every year. Abo Tanii worked hard and prospered thereafter.

According to the directions of Moopin, Abo Tanii celebrated Moopin every year during the sowing season, hoping for a good harvest. Consequently, we celebrate Moopin as Abo Tanii, our ancestor did. On many occasion many have posed questions when and how Mopin as festival started and smearing of ITI(rice paste) started being used by the Galos. Equally we are also interested to  more about this festival.

Interestingly, there are about 60 (sixty) rituals as performed

by the Galos from the past until today.These rituals are divided into two groups viz-Agam kane uyo  and Yunyi uyo. The Agam kane rituals are- Togu, Ilin Idor,Ima Homa, Mode, Hurin, Mopin, Ampir, Yute Bogum Agam, Donxi xilek, Amtu Amrin, Pomji Kaji, Xoodu Agam, Liitup Hiingi, Pomji Kaji. Kame Kaasar, Gen Kaale,Pator Pale, Papin, Hor Yapom Peka, Honyo Peka and Ali Peka etc.In these  rituals we use ITI and TAKE. Specially  during performance of HURI which is performed in the granary MODE, which is performed in the paddy field and MOPIN which is performed in the community hall or ground in the village. The practice of such bountiful celeberasations have been practiced from the past by the GALOS. Even today the  educated galos strictly perform many of the rituals even in town and villages.  Thus, the celebrations of MOPIN as seen in the mythology has come down fron the days of ABOTANI, DONYI MUMI and MOPIN AANE.                                           

Then we have another group rituals where restriction after perforpormance is more rigid.some of them are- Doxi Bonam ,Pombek,Jirdi bodi,Gir talv Gapuamd  and Doli Doga etc.

THE FIRST OPEN CELEBRATION:-

From the traditional performance of MOOPIN rituals in the villages how it this festival landed into the open ground and has become so popular;let us listen to the tales from one of the first organizers of Moopin in 1966 at Aalo.Shri Gumken Bagra was a student then, now an academician and a popular Nyibo(priest). Let us listen from his own words:-

“ A remarkable and drastic change of the celebration took place in the year 1966, when the Galo mpeople felt the need to celebrate to popularize the celebration on …massive way.The first meeting of the same was organized at Aalo under the chairmanship of Shri Yomar Riba,a student leader of Govt H.S.School Aalo(Along)on 12th January 1966.Again another to finalize the celebration took place on 12th March 1966 and selected Dagi Bagra, who was then studying in class –x as the convenor of the festival.The house passed to celebrate the Mopin in a massive way.on 1st April at Aalo. The following members attended the meeting and were the pioneers of this festival:-Late Yimar Riba –chairman,Shri Dagi Bagra- convenor, Shri Nyamar Ingo-General Secretary, Late Gotu Bagra- as the first Mopin Nyibu, Late Kore Bagra - first Pingi Neri, Shri Tumpak Ete,Shri Gumken Bagra,Late Ligin Bomjen,Shri Tapang Taki, Shri Hogjar Gamlin, Shri Doi Ado,Shri Lijum Basar,Shri  Iken Riba  Rakmik Boje, Shri Kartum, Late Marsok Eshi, Shri Bindo Lollen, Late Markom Taso, Shri Tomar ETE Shri Mitum Boje,Shri Rayom Jini,Late Taken Riba,Lte Mabo Lona, Late Hogmar Ingo

It was unanimously resolved to observes Mopin on community basis on April 1st every year. The venue of the Mopin celebration was selected at town club (present police complex) Shri Nyamar Ingo was selected as General Secretary to conduct the celebration for the first time. It was debated to a great extent whether to perform chicken-liver examination as festival cannot be performed without such examination as it was believed to be social taboos. But the house decided to celebrate it without chicken liver reading. Again another problem aroused as all the priests refused to perform the rituals because of suspicious and superstitions believe attached to it. No priest comes out to perform the rituals. So, Gotu Bagra turned up voluntarily to perform the same. Shri Kore Bagra also came forward to became the first pinge neri (sacrifices made in altar) and continued to do the same for four years. It was only after four years the people began to realize that there is nothing to believed in superstitions because evil spirit had not caused any damage to Gotu Bagra and Kore Bagra as perceived earlier. Their agriculture field began to prosper and yielded bumper production besides enjoying a happy social and economic life. By observing all these things, the people forgot all superstitions and come forward to indulge in ritual activities. In later year Rayom Jini voluntarily come forward to sacrifice the mithun as pinge neri. Thus superstitions come to and end and people took keen interest in the festival with broader outlook.

In the year 1967, a dere was constructed at Belumgath (present puakghat) as venue of the celebration. A meeting was held under the chairmanship Shri Tumpak Ete. In the meeting the date of celebration of Mopin was fixed to 5th April as the permanent celebration date. Tomo riba proposed chicken liver reading as per the traditions. But, Tumpak Ete opposed it as the sole aim and objectives of the celebration is to introduce Mopin in every year in galo inhabited area in massive way. The house accepted Tumpak Ete’s suggestion. Shri Tomo Riba then FPO was selected as President and Shri Doi Ado as general secretary on that year. The drama Diyi tami and Abo tani  of the author was staged in every efficient way. The two Mopin songs Mopin ripin naglaju asi abir akumto by Shri Taken Ngomdir and Hilo Mopin alo e ngunuk nyirmen ko by me inspired the people and created a great festive mood among the people. In the year 1968 Shri Tari Taipodia and I were selected as President and Secretary respectively. We went to Shillong then capital of NEFA to draw a sanctioned amount of Rs.20,000/- for the celebration of Mopin.

Mopin became a popular festival in Galo society after traversing all odds and reformation efforts put in by many veteran members. Mopin has awakened all the tribes of Arunachal, one after another all the tribes began to organize their in massive way.  Mopin inspired all other communities to take interest in their festivals and as a result festival revolution started ion Arunachal Pradesh. The hidden culture, oral literature, folk lore’s folk tales and various other cultural heritages were focused to the outside world. The pioneers of Mopin celebration of those days had dedicated and devoted their time and energies to bring the festival in colorful way.

So, in this way the Mopin celebration in a massive way started in Galo society. So, we should not forget our culture and we should make our effort to preserve it.

During Moopin, Moopin Ano, Moopin ‘Poopwr, Yilii Boqgo ‘Laanam, Moopin Hobo ‘Kaben and other oral literature are chanted. They are prayers for good health of mankind, better germination and renovation of relations between the earth and the cosmos.

At the altar of Moopin, the following images are included:

Bago porpotv, ‘Lwwtum-Kaatum, ‘Piqku-‘Pintv, Pwrku, ‘Pwrtv-‘Pomtv, Pwrsa-Pwrsi, Yapom, Xwji, ‘Xiku, ‘Buutv, Yapom, ‘Xira, ‘Kobu, Hikom, Pombek, ‘Doga-Vrap, Hilin‘Gvli, ‘Rwnv, Urom, Pombv-Pomru, Kombo, Koomar.

The following plants are used for preparation of the images of all the deities at the altar of the Moopin:-

Piibom,‘Piiso(reeds), Taakaa(fern), Taarii, ‘Tajwr, Tabo, Tato-Tano, Tapii, Ekkam, ‘Hwwkaa, Ensi,Hika ‘Eni,‘Hwwrv, Popi, Tabuu-Tabo, Yadum, ‘Koraa, ‘Tarv, Xome, Tasi etc.

Designs like Gorii, ‘Boolup and Karii are  regular parts of the Moopin image.

For Moopin worship/celebration the following sequence of activities is followed:

Kvbaa Gognam, Kvbaa Aloo, ‘Opoo ‘Monam, ‘Uyu Morop nam, ‘Wtww Wnam, Moopin ‘Buumv Gwwrop Nam, ‘Xibo Lvdo Tvgnam, Hoogww Tako Taree, Hikana ‘Akumnam, ‘Poopwr Poggoo nam, Yuugww nam, Piqgww ‘Nvrww Lo Innam, ‘Tomnv Nam Lo Poggoo Nam and Rwgaa Aloo.

Apart from the forest plants some household items like Ambin-Poonv are also used.  

The following activities are important for Moopin:

- ‘Wtww Wrnam(smearing of rice powder and past), Takee Pwnam (gingerpaste), Dosi-‘Ginsi Gvnam (decorated ritual granary basket), Hikaanam (offer to the deities), ‘Amin Kvvnam (grinded rice feast), Jvsv Okv Jvpv Gvnam(to put on only Mopin jesse).

- Moopin uyi‘Buumv Moma ‘Bv Moopin ‘Imum Maadoona. ‘Uii Moma ‘Yom Aii-Agam ‘Paama Ye.( Mopin to be celebrated with installation of Mopin images)

- Moopin Lo Hobo ‘Xvvbvv ‘Papv Lage Vmnam Kaamaa ‘Doona, Eek Moopin ‘Vm Sin ‘Ilaa Duu.(hobo sacrifice can be replicated by pigsas well)

- Moopin ‘v Mwwxww-‘Moso ‘vpak higv ‘naanv festival v.(Mopin days are the days of forgiveness and reconciliation)

Positive messages from MOOPIN

The Moopin story carries many a meaningful message for the good health of human relations on earth. Behind the celebration of each festival there is a certain value which is indispensable for the moral growth of the Society. A society has culture, faith and activities as pre-destined by the creator Dooxi ‘Poolo, God, Bhagwan, or whatever name may be used.

As a festival, Moopin is organized in the beginning of the agricultural cycle. But basically, Moopin is a worship of the goddess Moopin ‘Anv. As is seen in the chanting, the Moopin and her daughters endowed various agricultural implements and seeds; and taught the art of cultivation to Abo Tanii (though other duties also contributed in their own way).

The importance of Moopin mother could be placed along with Lakshmi and Annapurna Devi.

The celebration could also be equated with the celebration of the Minoans. Europe’s first empire, the Minoans on the island of Crete in the Aegean Sea, in around 2500 B.C., made offerings of food and drink to the Gods. Several different deities were worshipped, including the god of animals and hunting. Bulls were also believed to be sacred. The most important deity was a goddess of the earth and fertility. ”

DUE IMPORTANCE TO WOMEN: Genealogically the Galos mainly name their heir apparent with orientation towards the paternal side, by taking the last syllable (last two or three letters) of the father. More so the generations of Abo Tanii.

If we analyze the word structures, we can see that the daughters of Moopin and Mooji are named after ‘Anv Moopin, like ‘Piqku and ‘Pintv but unlike Dwyww Taamww. Taking a cue from this, sometimes Galo also name children after the name of their ‘Paatv (father’s sister).

‘Piqku ‘Pintv have also been given due importance in the ‘Poopwr chanting during Moopin. They are warmly welcomed to earth along with Moopin ‘Anv.

Hikaanam: The events of Hikaanam on the main day of celebration is the most spectacular part of the festival. The ladies with Dosi ‘Ginsi on the back, again Kamtuu Kamlam with ‘Opoo, Twwpak and ‘Wtww inside it move ahead to the ground near the altar and place them in a row. The items within are offered to the deities. ‘Opoo (a traditional rice beer beverage) is poured in the Kombo and Komar. Major portions of the ‘Opoo are stored in bigger containers for later distribution to the revelers in the festival ground. Some portions of the food items are offered to the priest and his assistant. The host committee add a piece of sacred Hobo adin (mithun meat) to each of the‘Ginsi baskets. At the end of the celebration the ladies happily pick up the ‘Ginsi and leave the ground.

Fellowship: Moopin lore makes reference to feelings of fellowship for others. The Moopin prayer is for the purpose of making everybody self sufficient.

MOOPIN DEMONSTRATES THE PROTECTION OF ANIMALS: When Tanii and ‘Kiipuu (the pet dog of Abo Tanii) reached the world of Moopin in hot pursuit of ‘Dumpuu the deer, Moopin ‘Anv picked up ‘Dumpuu and saved the deer from being attacked by ‘Kiipuu. For some days thereafter Tanii and ‘Kiipuu were fettered as punishment.

After some days, out of sympathy ‘Anv Moopin released Abo Tanii and ‘Kiipuu with many gifts of seeds, paddy, and maize, etc.

‘WTWW WRNAM (smearing rice powder and paste): Smearing ‘Wtww on each other’s face is a symbol of purity, social harmony, the exchange of love and affection, and a showering of plenty. In some other ritual performances like ‘Huurin, Ampwr, Liitup–‘Hiqi, etc. Galos have profusely used ‘Wtww from time immemorial.

KOMBO AND KOMAR: Kombo represents blessings and fertility. Komar represents the earth.

LESSON FROM THE STORY OF DWYWW TAAMWW AND ‘ROSI TAAMWW: The story of Dwyww Taamww and ‘Rosi Taamww tells us to be economical in household management, and to grow to the level of self sufficiency. Over-greediness may lead to economic downfall resulting in frustration. The story also tells that marrying excessively leads to the downfall of the family.

‘POOPWR ‘TVGNAM – A VERY GOOD PHYSICAL EXERCISE: In addition to the healing chantings, ‘Poopwr ‘Tvgnam (dance) involves a very good physical exercise. The whole process of celebration is for good health as well.
